BUTTWATCH

Welcome to BUTTWATCH!

We are on a mission to protect our planet from cigarette butts and we will go above and beyond.

Cigarette Butts

Cigarette butts are lit(t)erally everywhere.
They are the most littered item on our planet.
About 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are thrown away around the world EVERY YEAR!

Roughly 450,000 butts are tossed on the ground EVERY DAY in Vancouver!

Info

Some Butt Facts

  • Cigarette butts contain plastic fibers, toxins (e.g. nicotine) and chemicals (e.g. benzene)

  • They don't biodegrade

  • They can be recycled

  • Butts are very harmful to marine and freshwater life

1 cigarette butt can kill half of the fresh/saltwater fish exposed to it.

What can you do?

What Can You Do?

We can talk about cigarette butts and their impact on our environment for days, but that doesn't help either.
So, let's focus on what we can do instead!

Yasmin Schepens, former Ocean Bridge Ambassador, regularly picks up garbage in her neighbourhood. She noticed the huge number of cigarette butts littered on the streets, parks and beaches.
She wanted to bring awareness to this issue using humor and reaching a large group of people.
After doing some research, Yasmin came across the Vancouver Transit Shelter program and knew that this was the perfect medium to get her message across.

The poster was up in 10 transit shelters in Vancouver in the summer of 2022.
